  • Spotlight on Bryonia

Bryonia  is the number 1 remedy for symptoms that are worse for the slightest movement . This marked aggravation from motion is a great 'keynote' to indicate that Bryonia  could be the remedy that you are looking for. The pain of - for example, a headache, an injury or a chesty cough - is almost always intensified by even small attempts to move. So the patient will remain still and will likely feel better for applying pressure to the affected part - even lying on the painful side. It is an important remedy for injury and trauma, with intensely painful  sprains or fractures which are worse from any movement. Pains can be described as 'stitching'. The person needing Bryonia  will probably be irritable  and could even be described as like 'a bear with a sore head', preferring to be left alone, undisturbed and refusing to answer any questions. Intense dryness  is something else to look out for if you are considering using  Bryonia.  A cough will be dry and painful, and often violent. The patient will have an extreme thirst  for cold drinks, drinking large amounts at infrequent intervals. One more interesting symptom to look out for is ' food feels like a stone in the stomach' . So constipation with marked dryness could be an ailment that would benefit from Bryonia. When Bryonia  is called for, the onset of many symptoms will be slow, sometimes taking days to develop - except for in the case of an accident or injury of course. Bryonia  is less useful if the person needs company, or the complaint is better for movement. Think aggravation from motion, dryness, irritability, thirst, complaints come on slowly. But remember, every symptom doesn't have to be present for the remedy to be chosen.

  • Homeopathy and Hay Fever 🌷

Spring is just around the corner and it is such a wonderful season, with new beginnings and the promise of sunshine and holidays. Spring is also the time of year when trees begin to grow new leaves, flowers bloom and the lawn needs mowing. And so, the hay fever season comes in to full swing, bringing misery for many. Hay Fever is an incredibly common condition, affecting up to 1 in 5 people at some point in their lives. It is caused by an allergy to pollen, and uncomfortable symptoms include streaming, itching eyes, alternating blocked and running nose, and frequent bouts of sneezing. But homeopathy can help! Top Homeopathic Remedies for Hay Fever   Here is a little taster of just some of the homeopathic remedies that have been helpful for my clients with hay fever - but this list is by no means exhaustive : ALLIUM CEPA 30c  - this is for hay fever that mainly affects the nose - profuse, watery, bland nasal discharge with sneezing. Itching in the nose, mouth and throat. Eyes may water. head feels bunged up. Worse for a warm room and better in the cool open air. EUPHRASIA 30c - hay fever that predominantly affects the eyes - profuse, watery tears with a sensation of sand in the eyes. Tears may burn and eyes may be red and sore. Bland nasal discharge, but the nose can be blocked at night. Can have a headache. Better in the open air, worse in sunlight and wind. SABADILLA 30c - spasmodic, loud sneezing with copious watery, nasal discharge. Itching and tingling in the nose. Redness and burning in the eyes with lots of tears. Headache. Better for being wrapped up in a warm room, worse for cold air. If you can't decide which remedy is the most appropriate for you, HELIOS HOMEOPATHIC PHARMACY sell a combination of all 3 of these which you could try. Acute prescribing of homeopathic remedies in season can be extremely effective in reducing the most irritating symptoms. As each person's hay fever presents differently, remedies used are matched to individual symptom pictures. However, as hay fever is a chronic condition and is likely to recur yearly, constitutional homeopathic treatment is recommended, out of season. There are many home remedies you can try to relieve the discomfort when your symptoms flare. Increasing your intake of Vitamin C can reduce your histamine levels. Foods that have natural antihistamine properties include citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Other foods include pineapple, broccoli, onions, garlic, turmeric, nettle tea and green tea. Dairy products can exacerbate common hay fever symptoms, such as nasal congestion, because they increase the production of mucus in the respiratory tract. Dairy alternatives such as oat or rice milk could be helpful substitutes. Here are some tips to help in hay fever season: Check a pollen app to see days when the pollen count is high and you might need to take extra precautions Change clothes when coming in from outside and shower Wear sunglasses to help block some of the pollen from getting into your eyes. Avoid freshly cut grass. Try not to spend too long outside in the early evening when the pollen count can be higher. Close your windows at night-time. Increase vitamin C Use Haymax around the nostrils to limit the access of pollen Try Euphrasia mother tincture to bathe the eyes Try Pollinosan eye drops Give vogel nasal spray a go Reduce dairy intake during the season And here is a tasty recipe for a drink that you can make and take daily that may just help to build your immunity and reduce your symptoms: 2 tbsps apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp honey (local if possible) 1 tbsp grated ginger Juice of 1 lemon 1/8 tsp turmeric 1 nettle teabag or fresh nettles Add to 500ml of boiling water and let it brew for 15 minutes before drinking - maybe save some for later, poured over ice cubes for a refreshing summer treat. • Spotlight on... Apis 🐝

The second remedy we will look at is Apis - this is prepared homeopathically from a female honeybee. Apis is the number 1 remedy to treat conditions that involve swelling, such as insect bites, hives, allergies and oedema. Everyone knows the symptoms of a bee sting - burning, stinging, redness and inflammation. These are the main guiding indications for the use of Apis , whether from infection, allergy or inflammatory causes. Characteristically, the swelling is so marked that it gives the impression of a balloon ready to burst. The onset of symptoms requiring Apis will usually be sudden, and the person can feel quite intense fear, restlessness and anxiety. They will probably also be irritable. There is an absence of thirst and there will be an aggravation from warmth and an amelioration from cold. So if you have swollen eyes, or an allergic reaction to an insect bite, for example - where the swelling is red and very puffy - you might find Apis to be a good choice of remedy. Apis is less useful if the complaint feels better for a warm compress, or if the patient is very thirsty. Think swelling, redness, stinging, irritability, absence of thirst, complaints come on rapidly . But remember, every symptom doesn't have to be present for the remedy to be chosen.

  • Spotlight on... Aconite

Aconite is the number 1 remedy for shock, fear and panic attacks. The onset will be sudden and intense and symptoms may include restlessness, trembling and impatience. The person needing Aconite may be inconsolable and distressed, with a sense of foreboding and a frightened expression. The mouth may be dry and the heartbeat fast - even with palpitations. Aconite is also the number 1 remedy for nipping colds in the bud. It is very useful at the beginning of an illness - in the first 24-48 hours - where symptoms are often the result of fright, shock or anger. Exposure to a draught or to a cold, dry wind can also cause a wide range of symptoms, such as colds, coughs, sore throats, earaches, fevers and cystitis, so Aconite could be a good choice of remedy here. People needing Aconite are usually worse at night - around midnight especially - and are better from fresh air. They will not want to be touched, examined or interfered with and they may say everything tastes bitter. They are very thirsty for cold drinks and may have dry, hot skin. Think shock, fear, panic attack, extreme restlessness, fever, thirst, complaints come on suddenly, worse at night. Aconite is less useful if the person is calm, or the complaint has moved beyond the initial stage.
